First of all, Happy New Year and welcome to 2011!
TAKEN BY THE OTHERS releases in a matter of days!

People who subscribe to my newsletter got a sneak peek of the first few chapters–which I’m now making broadly available for those who want to get a taste of it before it comes out. I still haven’t decided exactly how I am going to celebrate the release. Do you guys want a repeat of what I did for the release of HUNTED BY THE OTHERS? A giveaway, a contest, or something else? Let me know in the comments!
There are plenty of awesome reviews popping up all over the internet, too! If you haven’t seen them, you can swing by the Book Faery, All Things Urban Fantasy, a GREAT Read, YzhaBella’s Book Reviews, Wicked Little Pixie, Dark Wyrm Reads, Book Whispers, Bibliophilic Book Blog, Notes of Life, or Worlds of Wonder to see how much they loved it!
Just a few review blurbs to whet your appetites:
“This is one love triangle that I don’t know who to side with, and I LOVE IT! …If you love urban fantasy, if you love awesome, fully developed characters, if you love love triangles done right, you will love TAKEN BY THE OTHERS. I cannot stress how much readers should start investing in this series ASAP. Trust me on this one, folks.”
–Book Faery
“Royce and Shia have a pitch perfect urban fantasy relationship. He wants her for semi nefarious purposes (and he just plain wants her). She is rightly terrified of him half of the time and terrified of herself the other half. Whenever these two get near each other (not often enough for Royce’s taste & way too often for Shia’s), sparks fly and it’s anyone’s guess if Royce is plotting to bite Shia or bed her. Can you say romantic tension?
“Shia & Co are my favorite character ensemble in urban fantasy right now. The dialogue always crackles with wit and biting sarcasm, dry humor, or sly innuendo with near perfect timing depending on the character. And Shia doesn’t just play the straight character who everyone else gets to be funny around, she holds her own cut-the-crap attitude and can’t help but mouth off when she’s really scared.”
–All Things Urban Fantasy
“With twists and turns that will keep readers glued to their seats in this nail-biting adventure, Haines once again displays her talents for quickly establishing character and setting. Haines’ quick wit and seemingly effortless writing style is sure to keep the reading adventure moving at a good pace!”
–YzhaBella’s BookShelf
“Fast-paced and action-packed, with characters both old and new, Taken by the Others will thrill you from the first page to the last, while providing more than one or two chills along the way.”
–Dark Wyrm Reads
“In this second book of the series, Ms. Haines builds nicely upon the events of the first book, taking Shia to new and even more dangerous places than before. Shia’s definitely becoming more complex, as are the other characters, and she’s learning who deserves her loyalty and those who are just using her for their own ends. Just when she’s ready to take the next step with her boyfriend, he flakes on their date night and she overreacts by calling Alec over to discuss the situation with Max Carlyle – to figure out what he really wants with her and find out who he is. Even though Shia can make bad decisions, as can any of us, she proves she’s willing to do what it takes to make it right. Even with the heavy-duty weapons and trusted friends, can she make it through this alive and sane?? Can she resist the allure and draw of two very powerful vampires? Pick up this book and find out!”
–Bibliophilic Book Blog
“Taken by the Others is book two in the H & W Investigation Series. And I have to tell you all, Taken by the Others is non-stop action! Book two was so much better in terms of action then Hunted by Others was, it blew me away. There are so many parts in the book that left me going, whoa! …If you’re looking for an Urban Fantasy that has more action then romance, or if you like to be on the edge of your seat reading…Taken by the Others is the book for you!”
–Wicked Little Pixie
“Haines has proven with this latest installment that she is an up and coming contender in the sea of books populating the UF genre. Be prepared to find a living nightmare, explore the White Hats, and see the true evil of the the Others. This book is an Adrenalin rush and you’ll want to have all day and night to read this one!!”
–Book Whispers
“I enjoyed Taken by the Others just as much as I’d enjoyed Hunted by the Others, if not a bit more actually! The pace is fast and there’s never a dull moment (despite Shia wishing her life could be just that bit simpler!). It’s most definitely a page turner and once again I found myself immersed in Shia’s story and her battle to stay alive. There were times while reading the book when I actually took a sharp intake or breath due to being surprised or shocked, other times I just wanted to shout “Nooo!”. Yes, it really is that good a book!”

I do hope that’s convinced anyone on the fence about continuing the series to pick up the next book. *g* If you haven’t pre-ordered your copy, here are just a few retailers who carry it:
As for HUNTED BY THE OTHERS, it is still FREE for download for a limited time! Hurry and get it before January 2nd (or, ya know, you can wait and buy it when it costs money–I won’t complain).
Also, I have an interview up with Jessica from a GREAT Read. She had some very thoughtful questions about TAKEN BY THE OTHERS–come swing by!
As for other news around the web, I’ve been a bit wrapped up in guest posts, interviews, and writing book four (mwahaha!) to catch any interesting tidbits to post here that haven’t already been covered elsewhere. KB/KT (Babbling About Books & More), Doug (SciFiGuy), Shera (Book Whispers), Nathan Bransford, Pimp My Novel, the Smart Bitches and Dear Author have more up-to-date news than I do, and I wouldn’t want to steal their thunder. Not that my thunder is nearly as thunderous as some of those people, but you know what I mean. *g*
Remember–tell me in the comment what kind of contest or giveaway YOU would like to see me offer to celebrate the release of TAKEN BY THE OTHERS! What would you like to win? A signed copy of TBTO? Your name guaranteed a spot on the list for a DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS (book 3) advance reader copy? An unreleased short story related to the H&W series? A gift card? You tell me!
