Doctor Who and Captain Jack Have Another Fangirl

I have a new addiction. Doctor Who has been around for quite a while (I believe the UK reboot is on its 7th season) and, while I’ve been aware of it, at first I avoided all things Doctor Who like the plague.

Someone kept pushing me to watch the show. A lot. If they weren’t telling me to watch it, they worked it into conversation somehow nearly every day for a couple of months running, kept giving me their Doctor Who/Firefly crossover fanfic, and basically made themselves a huge pain in my ass.

As you might imagine, this grew tiresome very quickly, so I dug my heels in and utterly refused to watch it. I would get pissed every time someone brought it up, because I did not want to hear one more thing about a show I had never watched, and now had no intention of ever watching.

EVER.

My angry face. Let me show you it.

Fast forward a couple of years. One of my other friends started watching it and turned into an obsessive fangirl. I grumped about it every time she brought it up. But it turned out that my roommate’s brother was a fanboy, so the two of them were talking about it. A lot. And then my roommate got into it. All of a sudden, I was surrounded by Doctor Who fangeeks. For months, all I was hearing about was “TARDIS”-this and “sonic screwdriver”-that. What the heck was an Ood? What’s the big deal about blinking? What’s so scary about those talking trashcans with plungers for an arm? What do you mean more than one actor plays the Doctor?!

Yeah. I caved. I’m halfway through season four, and I have fallen in love with this show. I went in expecting to hate it–maybe even wanting to hate it–but I’ve come to embrace the joy that is travel through time and space with the Doctor and his various companions.

So far, the 10th Doctor is my favorite. David Tennant is adorable. He’s just so excited and happy and curious about everything!  I think my friend Eve captured that perfectly:

The 10th Doctor, drawn by Eve Ahlroth (who is pretty damned fantastic in her own right). Shared with the artist's permission.

I love him as the Doctor, and I’m quietly dreading the change to a new actor. I’m very glad my roommate’s brother has season six on DVD, because otherwise I might have gone nuttier than I already am waiting to see it show up for instant watch on Netflix.

Come on.  Lookit dat face.  He’s adorable!

Oh, David! You and your sonic screwdriver! *swoon!*

Oh, okay. The 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) was pretty darn adorable, too.

Come on. Admit it. You know you want to take that hand.

The show is full of camp. At times it’s hilarious. Sometimes the cheese-factor is so high, even I have to roll my eyes. Yet, there are times when it is so emotionally powerful, it can make you cry (to be fair, this happened mostly in the first, second, and third seasons—the fourth is not wowing me like the others have). There are some truly terrifying parts, too—like the weeping angel episode. I’m sorry I waited so long to give this series a try.

On a side note, I did try to watch a couple of episodes of the spin-off series called Torchwood, but I didn’t find it nearly as entertaining. Sorry, Captain Jack. I’ll still drool over your picture, lust after your trench coat, and enjoy your cameos in Doctor Who.

John Barrowman is smokin' in that trench coat!

In short, if you haven’t already become a fangirl/boy of this TV show, I strongly urge you to give it a try. To be fair, it might take more than one episode for it to grow on you, but it’s worth sticking around for.

Hands off Cap Jack! His suspenders are mine.

OK, you can have Cap’n Jack. I’ll take RR and David Tennant. Hee!

I was scared of the early incarnations of Doctor Who, but enjoyed Christopher Ecclestone and LOVED David Tennant… just not so keen on Matt Smith (the latest Doctor)… He’s OK, but he just doesn’t match up to the delightful Tennant. Oh, and I love Captain Jack too and Torchwood (and was thoroughly drooling when James Marsters turned up for an episode or two!).

    9th doctor for us!
I really do not see the attraction of the 10th doctor or Jack for that matter.

  5. Jess says:

Aww, I was kinda scared of the old 80′s version, too.

I’m not up to Matt Smith yet, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed I still enjoy the show when I get to that point.

Sullie, you make me sad. ;p
