I Did My Civic Duty Today

I reported for jury duty this morning. While I’m glad I didn’t get pick to serve because the length of the trial was way above and beyond what I could have handled financially, is it sad that I’m just a teensy bit disappointed I didn’t get to actually serve as a juror? I’ve received a summons a few times, but never actually served.

Some of you probably already know I have a day job in addition to writing. It involves the legal field. I don’t talk about it much because it doesn’t have much to do with my writing, and I don’t want to mix work with my other work. I’ve worked other jobs for attorneys, too, so I’m fairly familiar with the discovery process. I also sat in on an actual trial once. It was horrifically boring because it was mostly the lead attorney rehashing a bunch of medical stuff I had researched and collected to help him make the case.

Anyway. So I was released from serving around noon, so went on my merry way and did some mundane stuff–got my hair done, handled some bills and admin stuff around the house, and then played hooky and went to see Brave. The movie was good, by the way, very cute and funny.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the reviews popping up here and there for STALKING THE OTHERS (and some of my other books, too), but I wasn’t sure if you guys were finding all the links useful or not. If you want me to keep posting them, let me know.

Catch you all on Friday with the Funnies!

What Are You Reading?

I’ve been a bit busy with the guest posts and interview questions for the blog tour, and I plan on catching up with some good books once I have all this stuff behind me.  In the meantime, what is everybody else reading?  Anyone doing a re-read of the H&W series to prep for the release of STALKING THE OTHERS?

Some of the following are sitting on the top of my TBR, or in progress/set aside while I work on everything else:

  • SOMETHING SECRET THIS WAY COMES (Secret McQueen #1) by Sierra Dean
  • SLAYER’S KISS by Cassi Carver
  • SPELL OF THE HIGHLANDER by Karen Marie Moning
  • WICKEDLY CHARMING by Kristine Grayson
  • UNDER A VAMPIRE MOON by Lynsay Sands

That’s far from all I have waiting for me, but those are some of the “priority” reads I’ve been meaning to get to for a while.  How about you? What’s at the top of your TBR pile?

Friday Funnies – A Prescription for Cyanide

A lady walks into a drug store and tells the pharmacist she needs some cyanide. The pharmacist said, “Why in the world do you need cyanide?”

The lady then explained she needed it to poison her husband.

The pharmacist’s eyes got big and he said, “Lord have mercy! I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband! That’s against the law! I’ll lose my license, and they’ll throw both of us in jail, and all kinds of bad things will happen! Absolutely not, you can NOT have any cyanide!”

The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife.

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, “Well, hell, you didn’t tell me you had a prescription.”

Bid On Books to Fight Cancer

If you guys haven’t heard, the Vampire Book Club is hosting a charity auction to raise funds for cancer research. Chelsea lost her father to cancer, and many members of my own family have had it, so this definitely hits close to home and is a cause I wholeheartedly support.

Click here for the full list of auctions/packages available. If you’d like a signed copy of STALKING THE OTHERS when it comes out, as well as items from authors like Stacia Kane, Devon Monk, E.S. Moore, etc, you can bid on that package here.

As always, any help for worthy causes like this is very appreciated. Thank you to any and all who participate!

Blog tour update: First, I wanted to say I was thrilled when I heard Library Journal has listed STALKING THE OTHERS as a Science Fiction/Fantasy Paperback of Note for the month! This really made my day.

As for an update on the tour stops, be sure to visit That’s What I’m Talking About, Fictitious Musings, Insane Hussein (Warning: this one is NSFW!), Gizmo’s Reviews for an interview and early book review, and head over to Books Make Me Happy today for the latest stop!

Friday Funnies – Bless Me Father, For I Have Sinned

“Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose girl.”

The priest asks, “Is that you, little Johnny Parisi?”

“Yes, Father, it is.”

“And who was the girl you were with?”

“I can’t tell you, Father, I don’t want to ruin her reputation.”

“Well, Johnny, I’m sure to find out her name sooner or later, so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti?”

“I cannot say.”

“Was it Teresa Volpe?”

“I’ll never tell.”

“Was it Nina Capelli?”

“I’m sorry, but I cannot name her.”

“Was it Cathy Piriano?”

“My lips are sealed.”

“Was it Rosa Di Angelo, then?”

“Please, Father, I cannot tell you.”

The priest sighs in frustration. “You’re very tight lipped, Johnny Parisi, and I admire that. But you’ve sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself.”

Johnny walks back to his pew, and his friend Nino slides over and whispers, “What’d you get?”

“Four months vacation and five good leads.”

I Miss Video Games

It’s been a long time since I’ve played EverQuest and World of Warcraft.  I used to play, long ago and far away.

Since I’ve been moving around so much the last few years, at times being without internet access–or even a computer–it’s felt a bit weird to occasionally have free time on my hands to play Solitaire or Plants vs. Zombies.  Usually very late at night, when I’m too tired to write rationally, and can’t fall asleep.

The online RPGs (RolePlaying Games) like EQ and WoW were usually more like expensive chat programs for me. Twitter has, in a lot of ways, replaced that for me.  I don’t really play computer games that involve other people anymore, and in a way, that makes me terribly sad. I miss the sense of community, of completing quests together, and discovering new places and creatures.

A few of my friends still play, and I’ve had thoughts about returning to WoW, but I have the feeling that if I did, I would not be able to meet my deadlines because I would get so sucked in to the games again.

What about you guys?  Did anybody out there play EQ or WoW?  Some other RPG?

Prometheus, Spam, and Blog Tour Updates, Oh My!

If you’ve legitimately been trying to comment on my blog lately and got a message that you were blocked as spam, I’m very sorry about that. I was getting upwards of 100 spam messages a day and was getting sick of it, so I tried a new blocker. Apparently, it thought EVERYONE was a spammer, so I took it off.  Email me if you run into any more issues, please.  I might try another blocker just to save my sanity (they’ve already started again, ARGH), but I don’t want to keep people from being able to talk to me, so… you can see the problem here.

In happier news, I saw Prometheus on Saturday and it was AWESOME.  If you are a fan of the Alien franchise, this movie is a must-see. Plus, Fassbender was H-A-W-T!

I have to admit, I walked out of the theater with more questions than answers.  Any other fans of the Alien movies/books want to talk shop? My roommate hasn’t seen it yet and I want to bounce ideas and theorize about some stuff with someone.

As for the blog tour, make sure you check out the latest interviews and guest posts at Seduced by Books (includes a spoiler-free review of Stalking the Others) and Notes of Life (includes a UK-only giveaway for my overseas buddies), and be sure to head over to the Bibliophilic Book Blog today for the next stop!

Friday Funnies – The Miracle of Toilet Paper

Just a quick thing STO Blog Tour update before the funnies: Be sure to stop by Steven’s Cybrary for a character banter post, giveaway (signed STO cover flats), and spoiler-free STALKING THE OTHERS review, E.J. Stevens’ From the Shadows blog for an interview of yours truly, and don’t forget to hit up the latest stop on the tour at Seduced By Books!

Now, to the funnies!  Awaaaaaay!

Fresh from my shower, I stand in front of the mirror complaining to my husband that my breasts are too small. Instead of telling me it’s not so, he uncharacteristically comes up with a suggestion.

“If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper and rub it between them for a few seconds.”

Willing to try anything, I fetch a piece of toilet paper and stand in front of the mirror, rubbing it between my breasts.

“How long will this take?” I asked.

“They will grow larger over a period of years,” my husband replies.

I stopped. “Do you really think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my breasts every day will make my breasts larger over the years?”

Without missing a beat he says, “Worked for your butt, didn’t it?”

He’s still alive, and with a great deal of therapy, he may even walk again, although he will probably continue to take his meals through a straw.

Stupid, stupid man…
